Production Scheduling

Here is a copy of the email in which we sent to our models (Jasmine, Savas and Luka) a week prior to our shooting day. It is really important that we sent them all the adequate information, so that they were fully aware of where they needed to be, at what time, what props and in a particular location- this is a major part of project planning, as without this being established, and communication between our models and us, the plans would be disturbed and we could let people down and go off schedule. Moreover, It is also important that we sent this a week in advance, to ensure that we gave our models enough notice, to let us know if they cannot make the particular date, and therefore we can rearrange.

Inspired ideas for Music Video

This is an important video for our music video planning, as due to the nature of our song of which focuses on Identity and fitting in with the 'cool kids', we decided that a key feature of our music video would be the inclusion of close up shots, as these demonstrated in the opening of Orange is the New Black. Obviously we shall make slight adjustments to our own version of these close up shots, for example, focusing more specifically on eyes, as well as a younger demographic. We also aim to add a blur in our close up shots, to enable steady and crisp movement between shots.

Moreover, watching this video is significant, as it enables us to see a movement of which we will hope to include in our own product, and therefore can be closely referenced to, throughout our production process.

Favorite Pop Music video- Tori Kelly 'Should've been us'

Victoria Loren "Tori" Kelly is an American singer, songwriter and record producer. "Should've Been Us" is a song recorded and written by Tori Kelly for her debut studio album 'Unbreakable Smile', which released in 2015. The song peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Tori Kelly's highest charting single in the United States. The song also received a RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) ‘gold’ certification selling 500,000 copies worldwide.
This is my favourite pop music video of 2015, because the style and concept of it involves a 'mixture' of the different styles of music videos, such as: performance, artist and dance, along with a range of shot types and camera angles that have been used to make the music video more interesting, and definitely caught my attention, in the same way that it did towards her target audience overall. Also, to be specific, an example of the types of shots used in this video are, close-up and medium close-up shots of Tori Kelly’s face when she is shown to be singing the song. The types of camera angles used in this song are, ‘Low angle’, for example, when Tori Kelly is shown from below when singing the words “back and forth like a tug of war what’s it all for, do I want it back”. Additionally, the shot types and camera angles used in this video have made the overall look of the music video look very engaging and likeable.
Moreover, this pop song has influences of urban music, and lyrically talks about an unrequited relationship, where she laments the failed romance and what it could have been like with her former lover. The song received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who commended it for being infectious and relatable. Therefore, because the song itself has a relatable message aimed towards her target audience, and is ‘catchy’ with a fun and upbeat vibe to it, instantly making the song successful.
The colours used within the video are shades of browns, black, blue, green, purple, white, etc. These colours are bright and vibrant, which make the music video eye-catching and attention-grabbing, therefore being highly appealing to Tori Kelly’s target audience. The music video includes footage of Tori Kelly being in different locations, from her lip-syncing to the song surrounded by an open space parking lot, to her lip-syncing with graffiti backgrounds behind her and performing at a venue along with the crowd present behind her. Also, in terms of mise-en-scene, Tori Kelly’s costumes/outfits remain simple and casual throughout the video, as she only changes her top 3 times and wears the colours black twice and white once. The types of props used in this video are: glasses, a mic and paint, etc.
Furthermore, this music video is energetic, as the beat of the music engages with the audience/viewer to watch and dance/sing along, since this music video is also very eye-catching and attractive. Likewise, this music video has also given me notions and an insight into the types of features/conventions and types of camerawork that I should involve in my own music video, in order for it to conform to the expectations of a typical pop music video.

Editing practice of filmed footage

This video has the duration of just 2 seconds, and was a paired exercise, in which me and my partner had to participate in. when filming the footage for this video, we took various shots and camera angles of one of our class mate around the school, and then edited it with Adobe After Effects, adding several effects onto the footage, along with adjusting and altering the video itself. For example, changing the levels of 'Hue/saturation', added effects like 'Grain', which made the whole footage look vivid and bold, as the colours were adjusted to look darker and shadier, and also cutting out/deleting footage that we didn't necessarily need to include. In addition, we altered/reformed the colours of the footage to make it look dimmer and 'sharper', because it was part of the editing process when experimenting with the tools and options available to us on Adobe After Effects, as we tried out the tools creatively as a way of improving and also learning new things about using 'Adobe After Effects'. Furthermore, this therefore greatly helped improve and develop our knowledge and skills on using an editing software like 'Final Cut Express', as this task particularly allowed me to practice for the real production of my music video. I have learnt and understood how to edit in final cut Express, such as, how to change the final cut file into a QuickTime file. Moreover, I have picked up many skills from this task that will be very beneficial to me when editing my production of a music video.

My Name is Julianna Moore, and I am currently studying A2 media studies. This is my second blog for A2 Media studies and this blog will keep you updated with my research and planning for my coursework based on Pop music videos, in which I aim to produce a high standard music video, album cover and magazine advert for my artist/band. Moreover, it is essential that my products reflect my chosen target market, and appeal to them, as my intention and objective is to ensure that all my products are reflective of other successful music videos, album covers, and magazine adverts in the market today.
